March with us!

The March for Babies is a cause dear to our Joy Makin' hearts.  We hope all of you will join us in spreading awareness about prematurity and in raising funds to help the March of Dimes end prematurity and birth defects.

Join Our Team and march with us to save babies- in body or spirit as you are able.  Even if you can't join us in person on March Day, you can still help!  Have fun, make memories and raise money for babies by taking our Pay It Forward Challenge or doing a virtual walk for babies with your family.  Last but not least, watch this space for more MFB fundraisers that are fun for you and SAVE BABIES!

Here are our team's walk details.  Sadly, the MoD is not conducting a walk at the Alexandria location we've all enjoyed in the past this year.  If you want to march with us in spirit but must march somewhere else in fact, join the team and then change your personal walk location.

Join the Party for Babies

Please join the Joy Makin' Mamas as we Pay It Forward... for Babies!  We'll be passing along family friendly project ideas at every skill level, so please don't think you are "not crafty enough" to participate.  Read the details, below, and join the party. You can put a minimum donation amount on your offer, limit it to the first five donors, put an end date- do what works for you, just help us get the word out AND SAVE BABIES!

The artist at work
I'm sure by now if you travel in crafty circles, you've seen one of your Facebook friends or a blogger you enjoy pledge to send something handmade to the first five people to comment on their post and to make the same offer on their own facebook page or blog.  If you haven't, well, YOU HAVE NOW.

Welcome to my Pay It Forward... for Babies post.  I'm sure you remember (and if you don't, there are plenty of links in the sidebar where you can check it out) that last year I pledged to donate money for every mile I walked to save babies.  This year, of course, healthy babies are more on my mind than ever.  One is banging away on my bladder faster than I bang away on the keys, after all, so it would be hard to forget it.

This year, my due date and the March for Babies date come awfully close to being the same darn date- so I can promise you I'll be at "The March" only in spirit.  Ian and I will definitely make our own trek for babies again, just like last year, but January's weather has not been kind to us.  More on that later.

So, right now, I'll be paying it forward this way.  You make a pledge on my March for Babies page, and Ian and I will make something for you.  (Some of his friends may help, too!  And he has a lot of friends.)  Then, you post a photo of that item on your facebook page or blog, or send it in an email, or host a reveal party (kidding) and let folks know that the first person to make a donation on my March for Babies page and say you sent them will ALSO get something made by me and Ian.  We'll surprise you, depending on where you live, and how much time you give us before this baby shows up, with something we sincerely hope you'll LOVE.

(See, the original "Pay it Forward" had YOU making things for the next person to respond.  Notice how Ian and I do the work... all you do is enjoy your Thank You gift and share the news with friends, while spreading the word that we are trying to help the March of Dimes save some babies.  That seems like a good deal to me.)

If you've got a blog, hustle on over to join our team, whether you'll be walking on March Day or not, regardless of where you live- you can change your personal walk location once you join- and make a post just like this one.  Then link to your post from this page by clicking the link and following the instructions below.  You can post the Linky List of other Pay It Forward posts in your post, too, so you can join the party.  Just use the "get the code" link.

Help us make the world a more beautiful place... for you, for babies, for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and, lest we forget, Big Brothers everywhere.

March for Babies: We did it and... we almost did it!

We lucked out and the rain cleared just in time for our Alexandria walk this past weekend.  So our March for Babies is marched.  Done.  In the bag!  Or rather, almost in the bag!

We have so far raised $4,730 to help save babies, which is just beyond fabulous.  But I have even better news!  We can keep on raising money through June 30, 2010 for this year's march!  Look for more details soon.

In the mean time, please enjoy my Walk Day photos.

Keep up the good work!

Just a quick "go team!"  We have, as of this moment, raised $4,601 to help save babies!

View our team page here.

I hope to see you at the Alexandria walk this weekend!  Please wear red or white if you don't have a March for Babies T-shirt, and look for the Joy Troupe banner so you can pick up a "Team Joy" badge and say hello!

A word about our goal:  We will keep fund raising until the absolute deadline in June, but wouldn't it feel good to show up on walk day knowing we'd met our goal?  If you've been meaning to donate, or know someone who has, here's a gentle reminder to do so.  Every dollar counts, and even the smallest gift will help us reach our goal!

MFB Auction #5: Custom Rag Quilt

Joy Makin' Mama Jennifer Bristow is donating her time and the work of her hands to bring you a custom made baby or toddler quilt. You will select the color and pattern of the fabric in your quilt, as well as whether you want the color blocks to be arranged in a pattern or randomly. This special keepsake will not only look beautiful in your baby's room, the easy care instructions mean this hand-made all natural item can be snuggled and loved for years to come. It will effortlessly transition from a soft place to lie down and play with toys to a treasured bedtime lovey.

***You would normally pay $100 or more for one of these special quilts, which are available EXCLUSIVELY by word of mouth!***

Rag quilts are versatile and trendy. They can be
modern or old fashioned. Each quilt can be customized to fit your
decor. By using a simple "X" stitch on a sandwiched square of two sided
material with organic cotton batting in between, the quilt is
transformed into a everyday, casual blanket. Easy care
instructions...just wash in cold water on gentle cycle and tumble dry
low. It is a "wash and go" kind of quilt. Typical baby quilt measures: 40"x24"

toddler size quilt - 45"x34"
The dimensions are approximate since it is a handmade quilt.

Joy Troupe Birthday Party Package: SOLD!

Thank you to Steven K. for helping us SAVE BABIES! Steven won this auction with just one bid. He got a fabulous deal, and the babies are richer by $65.76 after eBay and PayPal took their cuts!

In other March for Babies news, we are still the number 2 team for fundraising behind Dogtopia of Alexandria, but we are closing in! Let's harness a little competitive spirit and use it to SAVE BABIES! We can bump Dogtopia out of the number 1 spot this week if we try! Keep up the good work!

PSST: Look for the next auction later today! Be sure to pass the word about these auctions to family and friends- we are giving eBay a cut so they can be open to anyone who'd like to bid!

March for Babies Fundraising Auction #3: The Ultimate Birthday Party Package!

Visit the Auction and Bid Now!

You are bidding on a birthday party package which includes:
  • 2 hours of professional face painting.
  • Use of the Joy Troupe Bubble Machine INCLUDING bubble liquid
  • 24 cupcakes iced and decorated with cupcake picks
  • a $10 Shutterfly gift certificate so you can get prints of your beautiful photos!

Some young kids do not enjoy having their faces painted, so Joy Makin' Mama Danette is happy to paint the backs of their hands, instead.  She is donating her time and materials in support of healthy babies!  Yay Danette!

The JT bubble machine pumps out hundreds and hundreds of bubbles, and has a larger reservoir for bubble liquid than toy store machines, for extended fun without breaking for refills!  (You'll need to have an elevated position for it or the kids stick their hands in it.  It's just too tempting to ignore!)  Kids of all ages adore chasing bubbles, and you'll love, love, LOVE the photos you can get when your child is transported by joy and surrounded by bubbles!  You can use the machine outdoors or in, but you will want to protect surfaces if you use it indoors as the bubble liquid does make a mess and the floor can become slippery.  Very windy conditions unfortunately do affect the performance of the machine.

Imagine how much running around you'd have to do to put all that together yourself.  (And you'd probably shell out $250 or more by the time all was said and done!)  Now, remember that every penny of the net proceeds from this auction goes to help save babies!  Now, start bidding!

***This package is available within 25 miles of the 22152 area code.  In the event that your services must be canceled due to natural disaster, dangerous weather or road conditions, or illness, we will of course be willing to reschedule.  48 hours notice will be expected in the event of a change of plans.***

Please be aware that our face paintin' mama has some out of town dates coming up and will definitely NOT be available 4/24-5/11, 6/18-6/28, or 9/1-10/15.  Please give as much notice as you can (two or more weeks is best) so that she can clear her schedule outside of those dates.

One more way to help Babies

Did you know you can donate your used cell phone to be recycled and benefit the March of Dimes?

Learn more about the program here, or go directly to the postage paid mailing label and just send in your old phone in any USPS approved packaging.

We raised a truly outstanding amount of money for the March for Babies, and now I'm so delighted to discover this program- we can free ourselves of items that are totally useless to us, and help babies at the same time!

Why should I recycle my cell phone?
Electronic waste is the most quickly growing waste concern worldwide. The average life span of a cell phone is only eighteen months. On average 130 million cell phones are retired annually in the U.S. alone. Therefore, cell phone recycling is imperative. Nationwide, it is estimated that only 1% of retired cell phones are recycled or reused. The remainder litter closets, drawers, and unfortunately landfills. Cell phone recycling has even become a requirement in some states and counties. California has enacted legislation that requires retailers to accept obsolete and retired wireless phones from consumers at no charge. In addition, New York also has legislation that requires wireless telephone service suppliers to accept obsolete and retired cell phones at no charge to the consumer.
